Police woman killed, 5 others injured in Maiduguri explosion

An explosion yesterday rocked a polling unit in Maiduguri, Borno State, Killing a female police officer and injuring five others.

The explosion occurred at the Unguwar Doki polling centre, close to the Monday Market, about 12.30p.m., while voting was on.

An eye witness said the security agencies and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were quickly mobilised for damage control.

Another explosion was recorded in the evening at Abba Ganaram neighborhood during collation of results.

Response agencies moved singthy to contain the situation.

Casualties were recorded but police could not give figure as at the time of going to press.

The witness said: "About five voters were critically injured but security agencies quickly moved in to curtail the blast. It is still early to confirm any casualty figure.

"Many voters and electoral officials ran for cover as a result of the blast. The voting process was abruptly disrupted."
