Amanda Knox of Seattle, Washington, was found guilty in a trial in Italy for the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher. The guilty verdict and subsequent 26-year prison sentence was handed down on December 5, 2009 in Italy.1
Prosecutors accused Knox of slitting Kercher's throat with the help of her Italian ex-boyfriend Rafaelle Sollecito and Ivory Coast native Rudy Hermann Guede.2 Sollecito was also found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison. In a separate trial from Knox and Sollecito, Guede was sentenced to 30 years in prison on October 28, 2008.3
On December 1, 2009, attorneys for Knox stated that the prosecutors in the case had changed motives. Initially the prosecutors claimed she committed the murder during a sex game, while recently they claim she was seeking revenge for being criticized for her tendency to bring men back to their apartment and sloppy housekeeping skills.4 The day previously, Knox's attorneys argued that Amanda was not "Amanda the Ripper," but rather, a kindhearted, precocious young woman—comparing her to the title character of the film Amelie.5
