Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne defended Chrysler on Monday against concerns that rising gas prices will hurt sales because of the company's truck-heavy lineup.
He said the fuel efficiency of the company's lineup has improved 40%, and more improvements are on the way.
"We have not stood still in terms of improving the fuel efficiency of our fleet," Marchionne said.
Still, as gas prices approach $4 per gallon nationally, Chrysler lacks a top-selling, highly fuel-efficient small car and suffers from the perception that its vehicles are not fuel efficient, said Rebecca Lindland, an analyst with IHS Automotive.
