DURHAM, N.C. -- We were ready to count them out. Again.

Down 16 points to archrival North Carolina, the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils looked the furthest thing from defending national champions. They could not even defend their home court against a team with a freshman point guard making his sixth career start, and they certainly couldn't defend the Tar Heels' big men.

But to count out Duke is to count out Nolan Smith. Bad idea. The Blue Devils' latest four-year star doesn't play to the crowd like J.J. Redick, doesn't emanate charisma like Shane Battier or Grant Hill. He does, however, possess the biggest heart on the court most nights no matter the opponent -- and against hated North Carolina, it practically jumped through his jersey.

Smith's career-high 34 points helped Duke (22-2) take command of the Tar Heels (17-6) in the second half for a 79-73 victory that tightened the Devils' grip on first place in the ACC. He didn't do it alone. On the contrary, he got help from an unlikely sidekick, sophomore Seth Curry -- whose torrid shooting paved the way for his own big night (a Duke career-high 22 points) -- as well as a relentless effort from Blue Devils forwards on the offensive glass.

Rep. Chris Lee resigns after reports of Craigslist flirtation

Rep. Chris Lee of New York abruptly resigned Wednesday evening, hours after a gossip Web site reported that the married Republican had allegedly sent flirtatious e-mail messages and a shirtless photo of himself to a woman he met online.

Lee experienced his fall from grace in a single afternoon, undone at the speed of the digital age. At lunchtime Wednesday, he was an obscure but promising second-term congressman. Then, at 2:33 p.m., the Web site Gawker posted an alleged e-mail exchange between a man who used Lee's name - but identified himself as a divorced lobbyist - and an unidentified woman. Gawker reported that the two had met through the personals section of Craigslist.

Lakers look to pay back Celtics

It does not matter where the Lakers and Boston Celtics play each other.

That's because the rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics, the two teams with the most NBA championships, is so intense and historic.

They will square off Thursday night at the TD Garden, but the venue is not important.

Each team has won recently on the other's court.

The Lakers won here in the regular season last season, and they won Game 3 of the NBA Finals here in June. And the Celtics defeated the Lakers, 109-96, at Staples Center on Jan. 30 and won Game 2 in the Finals in Los Angeles last year.

"If we were to play a game in the park against that team, it would be hard-core and [trash] talking," Lamar Odom said after the Lakers' practice Wednesday. "It's always going to be intense when you respect a team. You don't have to disrespect a team to want to kick their [butt]. You have that much respect for them, which intensifies the game."

There's only one given: Rockets GM Daryl Morey wants one deal by Feb

The retooling of the Rockets is on hold, with trade conversations around the NBA in limbo while waiting for the major domino in Denver to fall. But according to several individuals familiar with the Rockets' involvement in talks, the Rockets expect either big changes to the roster or a small change involving the addition of a big man.

"They will be extremely active," one person involved in talks said. "Daryl (Morey, the Rockets' general manager) is talking to a lot of teams. He feels a lot of pressure to make some changes."

With the NBA trade deadline two weeks away, Morey has stepped up his pursuit of a center, several individuals said. Everything from the Rockets' expiring contracts, including the remaining months of Yao Ming's deal largely paid by insurance, to the Rockets' younger talent have been a part of talks.

Though Morey's primary goal is to land a centerpiece star, he would be happy to come away from the Feb. 24 trade deadline with a starting center.

According to several individuals with knowledge of the Rockets' thinking, the goals of the Rockets' determined pursuit of Carmelo Anthony are two-fold.

Capitals are searching for a spark

After loss to Sharks, team seeks a spark

In the time between their win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday and the start of their game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night, the Washington Capitals talked about habits and patterns. Win three in a row and it would be a more definite sign of progress in developing the good habits that have been a concern all season.

For the most part, the energy, emotion and dedication to the plan that the Capitals had in the previous two games wasn't there against the Sharks. That's why the players said they couldn't take anything from their 2-0 home loss to San Jose except an anger at themselves.

Japan FM slams Russian stance on disputed islands

Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Japan stands by its claim to the islands in the southern Kuril chain that were occupied in the closing days of World War II by the Soviet army. The dispute has kept the two nations from signing a peace treaty to formally end their World War II hostilities.

"Whether Russia sends its leaders there or boosts its defenses, it still has no claim under international law to occupy the islands," he said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev traveled to the island's last year — becoming the first Russian or Soviet leader ever to do so. He has stressed that he sees the islands as Russian territory.

Meet the dog who knows 1,022 words

They say every dog has its day — and Wednesday was that day for Chaser, a 7-year-old border collie whose owner purports that the dog can recognize 1,022 nouns. On TODAY, Chaser demonstrated that dogs may have some of the same capability to learn as human children.

On bended knee next to the alert-looking canine, anchor Matt Lauer ordered: "Chaser, fetch tennis." And after just a few seconds of nosing around the 25 items that her owner, Dr. John Pilley, had brought to the set, the dog located a tennis ball and promptly dropped it into a tub on Lauer's command. Chaser also fetched a peppermint chew toy in response to Lauer's command — but it was when he instructed her to "fetch SpongeBob" that she really showed her mettle.

"SpongeBob is not out there," Pilley told Lauer. But in seconds, Chaser wagged her tail while eagerly shaking a SpongeBob flying disc in her mouth.

"No, it's right there!" Lauer said. Pilley laughed and commented: "She sees better than I do."

AP IMPACT: At CIA, Grave Mistakes, Then Promotions

A hard-charging CIA analyst had pushed the agency into one of the biggest diplomatic embarrassments of the U.S. war on terrorism. Yet despite recommendations by an internal review, the analyst was never punished. In fact, she has risen to one of the premier jobs in the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, helping lead President Barack Obama's efforts to disrupt al-Qaida.

In the years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, officers who committed serious mistakes that left people wrongly imprisoned or even dead have received only minor admonishments or no punishment at all, an Associated Press investigation has revealed. The botched el-Masri case is but one example of a CIA accountability process that even some within the agency say is unpredictable and inconsistent.

Though Obama has sought to put the CIA's interrogation program behind him, the result of a decade of haphazard accountability is that many officers who made significant missteps are now the senior managers fighting the president's spy wars.

The AP investigation of the CIA's actions revealed a disciplinary system that takes years to make decisions, hands down reprimands inconsistently and is viewed inside the agency as prone to favoritism and manipulation. When people are disciplined, the punishment seems to roll downhill, sparing senior managers even when they were directly involved in operations that go awry.

Two officers involved in the death of a prisoner in Afghanistan, for instance, received no discipline and have advanced into Middle East leadership positions. Other officers were punished after participating in a mock execution in Poland and playing a role in the death of a prisoner in Iraq. Those officers retired, then rejoined the intelligence community as contractors.

Missouri executes man for rape and murder of girl

(Reuters) - Missouri executed by lethal injection a 47-year-old man early on Wednesday for the 1991 murder, rape and kidnapping of an 11-year-old St. Louis girl.

The execution of Martin Link, the first in Missouri in nearly two years, was carried out at 12:15 a.m. local time Wednesday at the state prison in Bonne Terre after last-minute appeals failed, Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Cline said.

Gov. Jay Nixon earlier on Tuesday denied a clemency petition, and appeals before Missouri and U.S. federal courts also failed.

Nixon said nothing had changed since Link was convicted of killing Elissa Self-Braun, who disappeared walking to her school bus stop. Her body was found four days later floating in the St. Francis River, about 135 miles from her home.

While much attention has been focused on other news in recent days, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) continues to recover from the severe injuries she received in the Jan. 8 shooting rampage at an event she was holding in Tucson.

Among the latest news on her condition:

— Astronaut Mark Kelly, Giffords' husband, reported on the congresswoman's Facebook page yesterday that "the doctors say she is recovering at lightning speed considering her injury but they aren't kidding when they say this is a marathon process. There are encouraging signs everyday though. Gabby's appetite is back and — even though it's hospital food — she's enjoying three meals a day."

Holy App! Catholic Church okays new confession app for iPhone

An iPhone app aimed at helping Catholics through confession and encouraging lapsed followers back to the faith has been sanctioned by the Catholic Church in the United States.

Confession: A Roman Catholic app, thought to be the first to be approved by a church authority, walks Catholics through the sacrament and contains what the company behind the program describes as a "personalized examination of conscience for each user".

"Our desire is to invite Catholics to engage in their faith through digital technology," said Patrick Leinen of the three-man company Little iApps, based in South Bend, Indiana.

"Taking to heart Pope Benedict XVI's message from last years' World Communications Address, our goal with this project is to offer a digital application that is truly 'new media at the service of the word."

Pope Benedict XVI's World Communications Address on January 24 emphasized the importance of a Christian presence in the digital world.

The firm said the content of the app was developed with the help of Reverend Thomas Weinandy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Reverend Dan Scheidt, pastor of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka, Indiana.

The app is not designed to replace going to confession but to help Catholics through the act, which generally involves admitting sins to a priest in a confessional booth. Catholics still must go to a priest for absolution.

Little iApps said Bishop Kevin Rhoades, of the Diocese of Fort Wayne in Indiana, officially authorized the app for Catholics to use.

"It has been approved by Bishop Kevin Rhoades," said Weinandy.

Leinen said the app has already aided one man in returning to the sacrament after 20 years.

"We hope many more will take advantage of this new confession resource," he added.

The app retails for $1.99.

How Will You Finance Your Business Purchase?

Even the most lucrative and attractive business deal can freeze in its tracks if an entrepreneur cannot get adequate business financing. This aspect is especially important if there is an opportunity for business acquisition, as really remarkable deals can be very few and far between, and getting adequate business purchase financing on time is the key. If you have ever thought about buying an established business, are you certain that you are adequately prepared?

Finding Funding for Purchasing a Business
Business acquisition financing most commonly comes in two forms:
  • Debt financing – relying on an outside source to get financing for business
  • Equity financing – selling stock or shares of your establishment to investors
Nowadays, it can be difficult to get business acquisition financing using either approach, given tight credit market conditions and wary investors. However, a knowledgeable entrepreneur should not face any insurmountable obstacles.

If you choose to follow the first approach and borrow a certain sum of money, there are several key aspects to be aware of. To begin with, to get a loan from a bank or any other lender you will almost inevitably have to demonstrate your business skills. The lender will also likely want to get adequate information on a particular venture you want to purchase, your collateral, and your plan on how you will repay the money back.

To secure business acquisition financing, you will need to keep several other things in mind. First, always have a backup plan – get approved by as many banks or other lenders as possible to protect yourself in case one of them backs out. Second, know that adequate business purchase financing should also cover operating costs. It is advisable to have a contingency plan in case the revenue drops. Third, make sure you have a comprehensive business plan, as this is ultimately what may convince the bank or another lender to finance your business acquisition.

Equity financing is another option. In this case, you would agree to sell a share of your business to outside investors. By choosing equity financing, you would not have to take a considerable risk and repay the debt; however, you would have to give up partial ownership of the company, possibly giving up some control as well.

Key To Business Acquisition Financing – Be Inventive!
In addition to the options mentioned before, you are highly encouraged to be inventive when attempting to secure business financing. The easiest approach is to try to secure seller financing. This would mean that the seller is willing to wait a certain period of time to be paid off. In addition, he or she will probably do their best to help you ensure the profitability of the business. The downside is that not every seller is willing to explore such an opportunity, and the asking price can increase anywhere from 5 to 25 percent.

If you are denied a loan by a bank or another lender, you should apply for a Small Business Administration loan (ie. a SBA loan). SBA loans have quite favorable terms and requirements; however, you cannot have funds available from any other sources.

There are also many other possibilities. You can try to get business acquisition financing from your friends or family members. You can draw from your 401(k) plan, and if you are looking for franchise business financing, you can contact franchise financing companies. With so many options available, getting financing for business is not too difficult, don't you agree?

Twitter data privacy in dispute in WikiLeaks case

WASHINGTON – Three people associated with the website WikiLeaks are asking a federal judge not to force the social networking site Twitter to turn over data about whom they communicate with online.

The dispute cuts to the core of the question of whether WikiLeaks allies are part of a criminal conspiracy or a political discussion. It also challenges the Obama administration's argument that it can demand to see computer data and read months' worth of private messages, even if they have nothing to do with WikiLeaks.

In court documents unsealed Tuesday, the three challenged a Dec. 14 court order forcing Twitter to tell the government the names of those they talk to privately and who follow their posts.

The information would allow the government to map out their entire audience and figure out where each person was when he logged on to Twitter, attorneys said, amounting to an intrusion on the First Amendment guarantee of free speech.

The documents echo the international debate WikiLeaks sparked when it began revealing a trove of sensitive military and diplomatic documents.

The U.S. is investigating whether WikiLeaks should be held responsible for leaking classified information, even though it was not the original leaker. Defense attorneys say it's a question of political discussion, arguing that Twitter communication about WikiLeaks is protected speech.

Freed young leader energizes Egyptian protests

CAIRO – A young Google executive who helped ignite Egypt's uprising energized a cheering crowd of hundreds of thousands Tuesday with his first appearance in their midst after being released from 12 days in secret detention. "We won't give up," he promised at one of the biggest protests yet in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Once a behind-the-scenes Internet activist, 30-year-old Wael Ghonim has emerged as an inspiring voice for a movement that has taken pride in being a leaderless "people's revolution." Now, the various activists behind it — including Ghonim — are working to coalesce into representatives to push their demands for President Hosni Mubarak's ouster.

With protests invigorated, Vice President Omar Suleiman issued a sharply worded warning, saying of the protests in Tahrir, "We can't bear this for a long time, and there must be an end to this crisis as soon as possible," in a sign of growing impatience with 16 days of mass demonstrations.

For the first time, protesters made a foray to Parliament, several blocks away from their camp in the square. Several hundred marched to the legislature and chanted for it to be dissolved.

In Tahrir, the massive, shoulder-to-shoulder crowd's ranks swelled with new blood, including thousands of university professors and lawyers who marched in together as organizers worked to draw in professional unions. The crowd rivaled the biggest demonstration so far, a week ago, that drew a quarter-million people.

Some said they were inspired to turn out by an emotional television interview Ghonim gave Monday night just after his release from detention. He sobbed over those who have been killed in two weeks of clashes and insisted, "We love Egypt ... and we have rights."

"I cried," a 33-year-old upper-class housewife, Fifi Shawqi, said of the interview with Ghonim, who she'd never heard of before the TV appearance. She came to the Tahrir protest for the first time, bringing her three daughters and her sister. "I felt like he is my son and all the youth here are my sons."

Tuesday's huge turnout gave a resounding answer to the question of whether the protesters still have momentum even though two weeks of steadfast pressure have not achieved their goal of ousting 82-year-old Mubarak, Egypt's authoritarian leader for nearly three decades.

Suleiman rejected any departure for Mubarak or "end to the regime. He told a gathering of newspaper editors that the regime prefers to deal with the crisis using dialogue, adding, "We don't want to deal with Egyptian society with police tools." He warned that the alternative to dialogue was "a coup" — a possible hint of an imposition of military rule. However, editors present at the meeting said he then explained he didn't mean a military coup but that "a force that is unprepared for rule" could overturn state institutions.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Suleiman, saying Washington wants Egypt to immediately rescind emergency laws that give broad powers to security forces — a key demand of the protesters.

Pawlenty: Society needs to ‘elevate traditional marriage’

IOWA CITY — Nearly every public policy issue that can be named has a direct impact on the very foundation of American society, according to former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, which is a traditional marriage consisting of one man and one woman.

Pawlenty, who told reporters before his public remarks on Monday that he is definitely "leaning toward" a 2012 presidential run, spoke on a litany of issues ranging from the economy to freedom of religion to education to health care, bringing each one back to his primary focus on the family. The remarks were made on the University of Iowa campus at the first of many lecture events featuring national conservatives hosted by The Family Leader, a state-run advocacy group that acts as an umbrella organization for the Iowa Family Policy Center and the formerly federally funded Marriage Matters.

Pawlenty began his public remarks by discussing why he believes the U.S. is a Christian nation.

"That isn't just my editorial comment," he said. "It's in our founding documents."

The basis of Pawlenty's remarks before the public, however, were laid out to members of the press during an advance availability.

"Of course, this being for this organization (The Family Leader), these remarks will focus on things that support, maintain and enhance the family's role in our society and culture," Pawlenty said. "People in public office who are responsible for developing public policy have a key leadership role and responsibility to play that in regard.

"All of us, of course, have memories and a background of our individual family situations, but more broadly than the power and impact of that is the research that shows the importance of families as the building blocks for children, and the stability that families bring to the socio-economics of children and for individuals, and the correlation between strong families and strong results in the economy and education and health and well-being."

Pawlenty applauded Bob Vander Plaats, head of The Family Leader, for "being a champion for saying and doing, and pushing and promoting and leading efforts to try to highlight, encourage and support families."

During the press conference, The Iowa Independent asked if Pawlenty's discussion of families as the building blocks of society included all families as currently recognized under Iowa law, and if he agreed with Vander Plaats' and The Family Leader's continued advocacy to roll back marriage rights for same-sex couples.

"The Family Leader and other organizations have taken a position in favor of traditional marriage. I don't distance myself from that position — I embrace it," he said. "I support the notion that we, as a society, should continue to elevate traditional marriage, that it should remain as between a man and a woman, and that all other domestic relationships are not the same as traditional marriage. That's my view. It's not something that I've changed or evolved on or need to distance from because I strongly believe it."

WikiLeaks Cables on Egypt

Diplomatic cables sent from American diplomats in Cairo — 2,752 are in the collection obtained by the antisecrecy group WikiLeaks – provide crucial background on the people and institutions in Egypt's government during the current struggle for the country's future. They also show American officials' close ties to the government of President Hosni Mubarak, despite occasional discomfort with his autocratic rule.

During a 2009 visit from Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak offered an analysis of Iraq that reflected both his fear of Iran and his doubts about democracy, according to a previously unpublished cable.

"Senator McConnell asked if the United States had made it easier for Iran by removing Saddam," the cable reported. "'Yes, removing Saddam from power was the biggest mistake ever committed,'" Mr. Mubarak replied.

The Egyptian leader said the Iraqi people "are are tough and bloody, and they need a very tough leader. They will not be submissive to a democratic leader."

Other cables offer revealing portraits of Omar Suleiman, the longtime intelligence chief, now promoted to vice president and overseeing talks with opposition figures, and Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi, the defense minister. Cables make clear how the Mubarak regime has long used the putative threat of Islamic radicalism from the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest opposition group, to warn the United States not to push too hard for democracy in Egypt. And the cables shed light on Egypt's role in countering Hamas in Gaza and helping to manage Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

At the end of each of the singer's Welcome 2 America concerts in New York, he's invited VIPs onstage to dance -- and in Cyndi Lauper's case, belt a few notes. Yesterday one of his stellar backup singers took Kim by the hand and led her onstage, saying, "Look who I got." Prince busted a move; Kim stood and laughed. So he dismissed her with a neck-snapping, "Get off the stage!" as the crowd roared. "Welcome 2 America," he added, scanning the audience for another girl who "can get busy."

Stars who have successfully boogied with Prince at MSG include Sherri Sheppard, Naomi Campbell, Alicia Keys, Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Foxx, Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, and Spike Lee. Yes, Sherri Sheppard, the same woman who horrified Prince on national TV by proclaiming on "The View," "I have wanted to make love to you for my whole life." He's even serenaded Leighton Meester with "I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore."

Columbus vs. San Jose

Antti Niemi is one reason why the San Jose Sharks are red hot, and he has a chance to become the first goaltender in over two years to get three shutouts in a row.

Steve Mason is the last to do that, and he now has the Columbus Blue Jackets surging.

Niemi and Mason should be in net opposite each other when the Sharks and Blue Jackets conclude their season series at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday night.

Niemi has started nine straight games, going 7-0-1 with a 1.85 goals-against average while fellow netminder Antero Niittymaki struggles with a groin injury. Niemi was pulled once in that stretch, allowing three goals on 27 shots through 30:13 of play before the Sharks (29-19-6) rallied for a 5-3 win over Phoenix on Feb. 1.

He's followed that up by starting San Jose's seven-game road trip with three straight wins. He made 26 saves in a 2-0 win at Boston on Saturday before stopping 25 shots in a win by the same score against Washington on Tuesday.

Niemi's outstanding play has helped move the Sharks within one point of Pacific Division-leading Dallas. A victory over Columbus would give San Jose its first five-game winning streak since Jan. 16-23, 2010.

"Just getting the ice time and getting wins - I was struggling to get wins so it's great getting some wins," Niemi told the NHL's official website. "I think we are playing great right now."

Niemi, 2-1-0 with a 3.17 GAA in four games versus Columbus (26-22-5), could become the first goaltender to blank opponents for three straight games since Mason did it as a rookie Dec. 27-31, 2008.

Possible windfall for high-speed rail

SAN MATEO -- The White House on Tuesday announced plans to spend $56 billion over the next six years to build high-speed railroads, bringing California's massive bullet train project closer to reality.

Should the plan -- one of Obama's signature job-creation initiatives -- make its way through Congress, California would be in line for the biggest chunk. That money would fuel the state's $43 billion bullet train project -- its biggest public works undertaking in a generation.

"This is the kind of bold investment in the future of our nation's infrastructure that will get the attention of the private sector and make high-speed travel a reality in the United States," Roelof van Ark, CEO of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, said in a statement.

The money could be used to extend the first stage of construction -- a $5.5 billion, 120-mile line between roughly Fresno and Bakersfield -- toward the Bay Area and Southern California.

The tracks will run along the Caltrain corridor between San Francisco and San Jose.

Assange Fights Extradition to Sweden

LONDON—A legal battle over whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be extradited to Sweden to face a sexual-assault investigation entered its second day Tuesday, with lawyers sparring over who had been more uncooperative: Mr. Assange or the Swedish prosecutor pursuing him.

Sweden is trying to extradite Mr. Assange from the U.K. for questioning over allegations that he raped one woman and molested another during a visit to Stockholm last August. He hasn't been formally charged with a crime, and denies wrongdoing.

Lawyers for Mr. Assange argued that he shouldn't be extradited because he tried multiple times to meet with Swedish prosecutors after they opened the investigation on Sept. 1, and before Mr. Assange left Sweden on Sept. 27.

But a lawyer representing Swedish prosecutor Marianne Ny said it was Ms. Ny who tried repeatedly, and unsuccessfully, to schedule an interrogation with Mr. Assange, who at one point went missing for about a week, unreachable by even his own lawyers.

The sexual-assault allegations surfaced at the end of August, in the wake of WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of classified U.S. documents. The leaks have led to a broad U.S. federal investigation.

After Mr. Assange left the country, Sweden issued a European arrest warrant for him, and he was arrested in the U.K. on Dec. 7.

Company defends its work on temporary seats at Super Bowl

The vice president of a company hired to install temporary seating at Cowboys Stadium said Tuesday his crew worked until two hours before kickoff the day of Super Bowl XLV to finish the job, but bad weather ultimately led to the fiasco that left 400 ticket holders without seats.

Scott Suprina of New-York based Seating Solutions told WFAA-TV (Channel 8) that his company lost four days' worth of access to the stadium because of snow, ice and cold weather. "There were many things that went wrong," he said. "I accept some responsibility."

But he said he did not abandon the job well before the Super Bowl began, despite earlier reports from Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck and a company hired to help.

"I've worked for 20 years to build my business," Suprina said, admonishing Cluck to "get your facts straight."

NFL and Cowboys officials initially asked Manhattan Construction to bring in a crew of 25 workers early Saturday to help Seating Solutions with the installation of handrails in several sections of temporary seating.

John Dixon, Manhattan's executive vice president, had said that Seating Solutions gave up on the work at midnight before the game. But reached by WFAA-TV on Tuesday, Manhattan said it was mistaken to have said Seating Solutions didn't work on Sunday. Seating Solutions has not responded to several requests for comment from The Dallas Morning News.

Manhattan, the general contractor for the construction of Cowboys Stadium, continued working on seats until 4 p.m. Sunday, Dixon said. But workers couldn't quite finish, and with kickoff looming at 5:30 p.m., Arlington fire officials declared six sections of seats unsafe.

Facebook Inc. will start moving employees from Palo Alto to new headquarters in Menlo Park this summer, bringing new life to the once-bustling Sun Microsystems campus, the company announced Tuesday.

The social-networking powerhouse, which lately has been on a hiring spree, signed a 15-year lease for the 57-acre, nine-building campus at Willow Road and Bayfront Expressway, with an option to buy after five years.

The company also confirmed it purchased a 22-acre tract formerly used by General Motors on the other side of Bayfront Expressway for future use. Employees will use a tunnel under the busy roadway.

RREEF LLC, Deutsche Bank AG's real estate investment management firm, confirmed it purchased the 18-year-old business campus from Oracle America Inc. on behalf of an undisclosed institutional client, but declined to reveal financial terms. Published reports and industry sources have said RREEF represented the Wisconsin State Investment Board in a deal worth about $100 million.

After the Airport Attack, Russia's Most Wanted Terrorist Hones His Message

On Jan. 15, Russia's state news channel reported the death of Doku Umarov, the country's most wanted terrorist. It didn't say how he died, nor did it seem to care that the only source of this information was a rumor spreading through a village in Chechnya. The news was just too good not to broadcast. But it turned out to be very wrong. In the past three days, Umarov has released two of his trademark videos, claiming to be the mastermind behind the suicide blast that killed 36 people in Moscow's largest airport last month. His propaganda war — and possibly his wider insurgency against the Russian state — looks to be more alive than ever.

Compared to his previous videos — short, monotonous clips that follow almost every bombing in the Russian heartland, even if he had no connection to the incident — Umarov's latest offerings suggest a much more quick-witted approach to information warfare. In the first, undated video, which was posted on the Islamist website Kavkazcenter.com on Feb. 5, he shifts away from his usual tack of defending the Muslims in Russia's North Caucasus region. Instead Umarov tries to play on the fears of Russia's broader Muslim community, which in December became the target of a massive race riot in Moscow. "[Russians] have turned on the Muslims who have no choice but to live in Russia, to live in Moscow...and have started attacking them in huge numbers," he says, from inside what looks like a concrete bunker. "Today we are forced to answer this lawlessness." (See "Moscow Airport Struck by a Suicide Bomber.")

Seated to Umarov's left is a young man he introduces as Seifullah — Arabic for "Sword of God." Staring meekly at the ground, the man states his willingness to commit a suicide attack. "Let the infidels know that more of my brothers will follow after me to give their lives in the name of Allah," he mumbles. "These are my last words."

Google Translate app hits Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch

Google Translate is now available on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

The voice and text translation application has long been available in mobile app form for phones running Google's own Android operating system, but hasn't until today been available as an iOS app.

The Web search giant did, however, roll out a Google Translate HTML5 mobile site all the way back in August of 2008, which allowed iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users to use many of the same features available on Android devices.

One feature not avilable on the iOS version of the app is the experimental Conversation Mode, which (for Android users) allows two people who speak two different languages to speak into a phone with the phone translating back to them in their respective tongues so a conversation can be held.

With Google Translate, users speak a word or phrase into their i-devices in one language and the app produces a translation via a computer-generated voice or text.

Tft Display Technology

TFT displays are a type of liquid crystal display (LCD) that uses the thin film transistor (TFT) technology. Most commonly used as display units for computers and TVs, TFT modules have become the new standard in viewing digital media. They contain thousands of pixels (transistors) made of a thin film silicon deposited on a glass panel. The glass panel can either be matte or glossy. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is a process used to deposit thin films from a gas state to a solid state on a substrate. One of the best picture producing TFT displays is found on the Lenovo W700 laptop computer which boosts a 1920X1200 screen resolution, 400 brightness level and a 500:1 contrast ratio. However, not all TFT modules are the same. Resolution, brightness and contrast vary greatly depending on the technology used to create the display.

Faulty chromosome behind sleepwalking

LONDON: In a possible breakthrough which may pave the way for a cure for somnambulism, scientists claim to have identified the "genetic code" which makes some people sleepwalk. An international team has claimed that sufferers share a faulty chromosome which is responsible for their behaviour while asleep; by studying four generations of the same family, the scientists traced the fault to a section of chromosome 20.

Carrying even one copy of the defective DNA is enough to cause sleepwalking and having isolated the defective section of genetic code, they hope to find new treatments for the condition, the Neurology journal reported.

Sudanese Authorities Seek Debt Relief Before South Becomes Independent

Sudanese authorities want creditors to write off much of the country’s $38 billion foreign debt before Southern Sudan becomes independent in July, a minister in the southern government said.
Without debt relief, the northern and southern regions are likely to split the debt load, Gabriel Changson Chang, a member of the committee negotiating financial arrangements with the north, said today in an interview in Juba, the southern capital. At most, 75 percent of the debt will be written off, he said.
Sudan hasn’t been able to borrow from the World Bank since 1993 because of its failure to make payments on its debt. That may leave the south, one of Africa’s poorest regions, ineligible to borrow from the bank. Sudan has debt arrears of about $30 billion, according to the Washington-based Center for Global Development.
“We want both the north and south to be economically viable,” said Chang, who also is the southern minister of culture.
Almost 99 percent of Southern Sudanese voters chose independence in a referendum last month. The plebiscite was the centerpiece of a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war between northern and southern Sudan.
At independence the south will assume control of almost three quarters of Sudan’s current oil production of 490,000 barrels a day, pumped mainly by China National Petroleum Corp., Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Bhd. and India’s Oil & Natural Gas Corp. Sudan’s output is the third-biggest in sub-Saharan Africa.

Our hopes for the new southern Sudan nation are enormous

On Monday, I joined hundreds of people packed into the John Garang Memorial Centre, armed with small "South Sudan" flags. A big TV screen connected us to the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission in Khartoum.

Finally – the announcement that all of southern Sudan has been waiting to hear – the results of our vote on our future, whether or not to become a separate nation.

As I heard the news, my mind was ringing with the challenges ahead. Then my phone also started ringing, with friends from around southern Sudan telling me how they were celebrating.

People were happy but calm, as they had already known that the results were a landslide. Some groups went to hotels and bars to party, and danced until morning.

I am proud that we have been able to defy the doubters, with a calm vote – a clear show of everyone's heartfelt wish for peace.

Unified in our almost 100% vote for separation, among southerners the talk on the street is now a determination to pull together for the development of our new nation.

I hear more than 200,000 southerners have returned from the north, many coming back with the desire to develop our new nation. In Juba, where I live, many are stranded at the Nile River port, still awaiting assistance so they can reach their final destination.

Super Bowl Movie Spots Reveal 'Transformers' and More

Now that the victor has been decided between the Packers and the Steelers, we can look forward to the next great matchups: Autobots vs. Decepticons, Pirates vs. Zombies, Rock vs. Diesel, and Cowboys vs. Aliens.

The biggest films of next summer showed off their stuff last night for viewers of the Super Bowl, and now we have the movie spots from the game for you to watch again (or for the first time). They include the first look at Optimus Prime's return in "Tranformers: Dark of the Moon," an extended spot for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and ads for "Fast Five," "Kung Fu Panda 2," "Cowboys & Aliens" and more.

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON

Before this spot aired, director Michael Bay had only released a short and mysterious teaser trailer from his third and reportedly final film in the "Transformers" franchise. The Super Bowl ad, however, dispensed with the subtlety and showed some real action. It shows returning stars Shia LaBeouf and Tyrese Gibson caught in the crossfire as alien spacecraft reign down destruction on the city of Chicago.

Toyota Raises Profit Forecast on Demand in Asia

Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest carmaker, raised its full-year profit forecast as sales in emerging markets exceeded the company's estimates.

Net income may total 490 billion yen ($5.95 billion) for the 12 months ending March 31, compared with an earlier estimate of 350 billion yen, the Toyota City, Japan-based company said in a statement today. That was higher than the 470 billion yen average estimate of 11 analysts compiled by Bloomberg.

Toyota follows Honda Motor Co. in boosting its earnings outlook as economic growth in Asia spurs sales, helping the automaker recover from the impact of record recalls. Toyota's sales in the region, excluding Japan, rose 24 percent in December. The company introduced the Etios compact in India in December and has received more than 22,000 orders for the model.

"Demand in Asia will continue to grow," said Satoru Takada, a Tokyo-based analyst at TIW Inc. "The automaker was also able to control its costs."

For the fiscal third quarter, net income fell 39 percent to 93.6 billion yen.

Julian Assange 'would face bias in Sweden', retired judge says

The prosecutor leading the rape and sexual assault case against Julian Assange is a "malicious" radical feminist who is "biased against men", a retired senior Swedish judge has told the hearing into Assange's extradition to Sweden.

In caustic evidence on the first day of the two-day hearing, Brita Sundberg-Weitman, a former appeal court judge, told Belmarsh magistrates court that Sweden's chief prosecutor, Marianne Ny, who is seeking the WikiLeaks founder's extradition, "has a rather biased view against men". "I can't understand her attitude here. It looks malicious," she said.

Geoffrey Robertson QC, acting for Assange, asked if it was her view that Ny wanted "to get [Assange] into her clutches and then arrest him no matter what?"

"Yes" said Sundberg-Weitman. "It might be her attitude to have the man arrested and maybe let him suffer for a few weeks to have him softer [for interrogation]."

Such was the hostility towards Assange in Sweden that "most people take it for granted that he's raped two women", she said. The country is seeking Assange's extradition in relation to allegations of rape, sexual assault and sexual molestation made by two women in August.

He denies all the allegations and has not been charged.

Freed cyber activist lauds protests

Egyptian anti-government protesters have welcomed the release of a Google executive who disappeared in Cairo last month after playing a key role in helping demonstrators organise.

Wael Ghonim was released on Monday by Egyptian authorities, sparking a fast and explosive response from supporters, bloggers and pro-democracy activists on the internet.

Ghonim's release came nearly two weeks after he was reported missing on January 28 during protests against Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

"Freedom is a bless[ing] that deserves fighting for it," Ghonim, Google's head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, wrote in a message posted on his Twitter account shortly after his release.

He said he was seized in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, late last month as he joined tens of thousands of protesters in the city's Tahrir Square, the focal point of protests aimed at calling on Mubarak to step down from his 30-year-rule in Egypt.

Ghonim said he was picked up by three plainclothes men on the street, pushed into a car and taken off for interrogation by state security members.

'Not a hero'

The prominent blogger spoke to Egypt's On TV after his release on Monday, pleading with reporters not to call him a hero.

"Please don't make me a hero. I'm not a hero. I have been asleep for 12 days," he said.

"I hope that we would be able to put an end to all the rubbish in this country. The rubbish really needs to be cleaned up."

Ghonim gave a subsequent, emotional interview to the privately owned Egyptian channel Dream TV later on Monday.

Is vandalism linked to murder?

In January 2009 Scott and Kylee Guy were building a home at 293 Aorangi Rd.

The house was fully enclosed but still incomplete and the couple were not living on the property.

Overnight on January 30 to 31 2009 the house was subjected to extensive vandalism causing about $13,800 damage.

This included broken windows and damage to the internal walls and plumbing.

In addition to this damage, the phrase "F.ken B..ch Slappr" was painted in large letters on an outside wall.

Another phrase was painted on a wall, this time using a different spelling of "F..kn".

For investigative reasons, the second phrase is not being disclosed in full.

There was a police investigation into the damage at the time and the vandalism has been subjected to a second investigation by the Scott Guy homicide team.

Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger said the damage was a crime against the property.

General Yoweri Museveni Assures the Nation that there wont be Election Violence

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People's Defense Forces UPDF), General Yoweri Museveni, has re-assured the nation that there will never be any elections' violence in Uganda and warned that whoever will try to bring chaos will do so on his/her own risk.

The President was today presiding over the 30th anniversary celebrations (Tarehe Sita) to mark the founding of the Uganda People's Defense Forces at Soroti Sports grounds.

The colorful ceremony which took place at Soroti Sports Grounds in Soroti Municipality was characterized by a march past by officers and men of the UPDF including the civilian communities. The celebrations were also attended by visiting military delegations from Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda, the South Sudan People's Army (SPLA), Kenya and Djibouti.

The celebrations run under the theme "Enhancing Peace, Security and Stability for Sustained National and Regional Development."

President Museveni, who congratulated the people of Uganda upon the Tarehe Sita celebrations and for attaining the prevailing peace after many years of turmoil, assured Ugandans that the peace enjoyed in the country is irreversible and no one can disturb that peace.

He commended the good work of the Arrow Boys and other Militia Groups in Teso and Lango Sub-Regions for helping the Army to rout Kony terrorists from their areas.

"I salute the Arrow Boys and other militia groups that helped the UPDF. Since we were fighting the terrorists who were fighting civilians, it was good to have a force that was maintaining peace in the villages while the Army pursued LRA", he said.

Commenting on 30th anniversary of Tarehe Sita celebrations, The President said that it was not the 1st phase of the struggle but the 2nd. He explained that the 1st phase was the resistance against the dictatorial regime of Idi Amin between1971 to 1979. He added that after the fall of Amin, many political issues had not been resolved. He said the progressive forces then launched the second phase that brought the peace now prevailing in the country, including taming the Karimojong warriors who used to torment their neighbors by rustling their cattle. He assured the people of Teso Sub-Region that the restocking exercise wiil be operationalised since the guns used for raiding their cattle have been removed from the Karimojong rustlers.

"In fact, we tried to restock cattle in Teso and other districts neighbouring Karamoja but they (cattle) were raided. So the only solution was to remove the guns from the Karimojong which the Army has successfully done", he affirmed.

The President added that the Government of Uganda now needs to work with the Government of Kenya to remove guns from the Kenyan Pokot. He noted that there is peace in the whole country the only problem being indiscipline among the political class who tell lies. He, therefore, warned that the government is now going to insist on discipline.

The President pointed out that some countries, such as Tanzania, have had peace for a long time because they deal with the issue of discipline.

"The time of indiscipline is over. Those who are encouraging that should take note because we have sacrificed for the last 45 years. NRM now has the capacity to deal and impose discipline among the political class", he stressed.

He praised the Army for being patriotic citing the works of the forces during the Army Week like treating wananchi in Teso Sub-Region free of charge. "You must get people who love their country. Our Army is a patriotic army and that is what makes the difference between the Army medical doctors and the civilian ones. They are patriotic; they don't steal drugs and I will allow Army doctors to stay here for some more days", he told the excited gathering.

President Museveni also congratulated the people of Southern Sudan upon attaining autonomy through the referendum that was conducted in that country to secede from Northern part.

"I congratulate our brothers and sisters from Southern Sudan upon their victory. The problems of Southern Sudan were part of our problems. The black people there wanted their freedom. The world never understood that situation. I am now glad that the problem has come to an end", he said.

The Minister of State for Defense, General JeJe Odong, was happy to note that Tarehe Sita celebrations were held when security in the country was at its best.

State Minister for Refugees and Disaster Preparedness, Mr. Musa Ecweru, thanked the government for choosing Teso to host this year's Tarehe Sita celebrations adding that the people of the region will remember NRM for rescuing them from Kony banditry and also for disarming the Karimojong cattle rustlers.

The Chief of the Defense Forces, General Aronda Nyakairima, described Tarehe Sita celebrations as historic and memorable because that was the day history was changed in Uganda.

During the celebrations, over 620 persons received awards of medals in different categories of Kagera, Nalubale, Damu and Luwero Triangle, in recognition of their contribution to the liberation struggle of the country.

Party ejection led to Ohio frat house shooting, police say

(CNN) -- The two men accused of shooting into a Youngstown State University fraternity house, killing one and wounding 11, were apparently angry because they were being thrown out of a party there, police said Monday.

Police identified the suspects in the Sunday shooting as Columbus E. Jones, 22, and Braylon L. Rogers, 19, both Youngstown residents.

Jamail Johnson, 25, of Girard, Ohio, died in the shooting. He was shot once in the back of the head and several times in the lower body, Dr. Joseph Ohr, a forensic pathologist at the Mahoning County Coroner's Office, told CNN.

Eleven people, including six students, were hurt. All but three had been treated and released by Sunday afternoon, said Tina Creighton, a spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Creighton did not immediately return a telephone message Monday seeking an update.

Danaher To Acquire Beckman Coulter For $5.87B

Danaher Corp. (DHR) agreed to acquire medical-test maker Beckman Coulter Inc. (BEC) for $5.87 billion as the diversified tool manufacturer looks to gain a stronger foothold in the growing diagnostics industry.
The deal ends two months of speculation about the future of Beckman, which endured a rough year last year following the recall of a faulty test for heart problems, multiple financial guidance cuts and an unexpected CEO resignation. The Wall Street Journal reported in December that Beckman had put itself on the block and could fetch more than $5 billion in a sale. Analysts had speculated the company would attract a large number of suitors.
Under the terms of the deal, Danaher will pay $83.50 for each Beckman share, which the companies said represents a premium of about 45% over where the stock was trading Dec. 9, before takeover rumors surfaced.
Beckman shares surged 10% to $82.57 in premarket trading Monday, while Danaher was up 3.3% to $49.50. Beckman shares have never traded as high as the offer price and under $44 as recently as September. The stock is up 36% in the past three months, thanks to the acquisition speculation.
The Orange County, Calif., company was thrown into turmoil last year when it recalled a test for measuring a protein that signals heart problems due to faulty results. Beckman also came under fire from the Food and Drug Administration, which believed the company marketed that test without needed agency clearance. Beckman has been working on a clinical trial to support two upcoming FDA applications to back that test.

A tourist's guide to the new Kepler-11 planet system

The new discovery of six alien planets orbiting a sunlike star may be only a small part of the data released Wednesday from NASA's planet-hunting Kepler mission, but it is significant as the most tightly packed planetary arrangement around a single star yet discovered.

The six planets orbiting Kepler-11 are all larger than Earth, with the largest ones comparable in size to Uranus and Neptune. As far as exoplanets go, these are relatively small worlds.

Kepler-11 is located about 2,000 light-years from Earth. Astronomers used observations made by the Kepler spacecraft to detect the six planets that transit — pass in front of — the star.

The innermost planet, Kepler-11b, is 10 times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun. Moving outward, the other planets are Kepler-11c, Kepler-11d, Kepler-11e, Kepler-11f and the outermost planet, Kepler-11g, which is half as far from its star as Earth is from the sun.

None of the extrasolar planets are inside the so-called "habitable zone" – orbits where water could exist as a liquid on their surfaces, scientists said.

The five inner planets in the Kepler-11 system range in size from 2.3 to 13.5 times the mass of Earth. The orbits of all five would fit inside the orbit of Mercury in our solar system, and all of them circle their star in fewer than 50 Earth days.

The sixth planet is the largest of the group and has an undetermined mass. Its orbit is smaller than Venus', and it completes one orbit every 118 days.

Protesters pledge more pressure on Mubarak

Leaders of the Egyptian democracy movement vowed Sunday to escalate their pressure for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, even as his government portrayed itself as already in the midst of American-approved negotiations to end the uprising, now in its 13th day.

The government announced that the transition had begun with a meeting between Vice President Omar Suleiman and two representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood, the outlawed Islamist group the Egyptian government has sought to repress for many years as a threat to stability. They met as part of a group of about 50 prominent Egyptians and opposition figures, including officials of the small, recognized opposition parties, as well as a handful of young people who helped start the protest movement.
