Savings Hit £5 Billion At Wales' Largest Building Society | Benzinga.com

"Against a climate of continued economic uncertainty Principality Building Society says saving has never been so popular in Wales.

The Society attracted over 45,000 new savings customers in 2010, adding to the 116,000 recruited over the previous two years.

Graeme Yorston, Chief Operating Officer at the Society, said: “Thrift is the new social phenomenon of the future. When people are uncertain, they'll save more, when they're confident, they'll spend more.”

The results are mirrored by the Principality's Year in the Life of Welsh Savers report – based on the findings of the Society's first completed year of Quarterly Saving and Spending Surveys.

According to the report, between 2009 and 2010 the average saver in Wales put aside a personal total of £4,210, with those in Wrexham saving the most (£4,831), compared to Cardiff (£4,698), Swansea (£3,961) and Newport (£3,043).

That represents an average of 14.6 per cent of their annual after-tax income.
