Accused Tampa mother pleads not guilty, despite confession to detectives

The mother accused of killing her two teenage children pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Amid extra security, Julie Schenecker sat with her eyes closed, not saying a word, as she formally heard the charges against her. Aided by a public defender, Schenecker entered a plea of not guilty.

According to Tampa Police, Schenecker shot and killed her children Calyx, 16, and Beau, 13.

Investigators said the 50-year-old mother wrote a note describing her plans to shoot her children and herself before shooting the two teens on Jan. 27. Schenecker was booked into jail the same day her teens were found shot to death.

A 'not guilty' plea is standard, even in the face of a confession. John Fitzgibbons is a former prosecutor and a high-profile defense attorney.
