The Wizards' first road win in 27 games was emotional for many reasons, as it freed the team of an embarrassing burden that had been hounding them for several months. But even as the Wizards celebrated the 115-100 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with laughter and jokes in the locker room, Coach Flip Saunders was still dealing with a heavy heart as his 90-year-old mother, Kay, continues to battle with deteriorating health.
"She's in intensive care, struggling," said Saunders, a native Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio.
The team spent the night in Cleveland, allowing Saunders to spend some extra time with his ailing mother. Saunders missed a Dec. 29 victory over Indiana to be with her in suburban Cleveland, after she was first hospitalized. He has visited her on a few off days, and also missed two practices, most recently before a road loss in Milwaukee three weeks ago.
