NBN warned to upgrade security on taxpayer-funded network

NBN Co has been urged to pay greater attention to the security of the taxpayer-funded broadband network amid concerns criminal groups may use its massive bandwidth for malicious purposes.

One of the nation's peak internet security organisations, AusCERT, said it was concerned NBN Co. was treating security as a "bolt-on" extra.

As police alleged a 25-year-old hacker had infiltrated an internet service provider linked to the National Broadband Network, AusCERT general manager Graham Ingram warned the network's security could not be left to end-users.

He said he was encouraged by recent security appointments by NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley, but concerned security measures weren't being incorporated into the network itself.

"Generally, in a security sense, if it's not incorporated into the architecture of the design - if it's an add-on after the event - it's a catch-up," Mr Ingram said.
