Probe into fire at gas station could take days

Taupo police say it could take another two days for fire investigators to complete a scene examination at a Waikato petrol station.

The Fire Service says the Gasoline Alley station in Whakamaru caught fire just after 1.30am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce said the service station and nearby workshop was totally destroyed in the blaze.

"We need to make sure the fire is totally extinguished before the scene is fully examined," Pearce said.

Firefighters have been dampening the scene down to enable specialist fire and police investigators to investigate.

Pearce said police are treating the fire as suspicious until the scene examination is complete.

At its hight, 50 firefighters and 10 fire engines from Mangakino, Tokoroa and Taupo were used to tackle the fire in the 20 by 30 metre building which was well alight when the fire crews arrived.
