Wimbledon legends plea to Roger to come back for one more title assault

Roger Federer has been urged to return to Wimbledon again by two former legends amid suggestions that the Swiss master may never again taste success at his favourite Grand Slam.

It was on this day, 30 years ago that John McEnroe defeated Bjorn Borg in one of the classic final showdowns of all-time and the duo were once more re-united in a promotional capacity.

They might have been unveiling the latest in Borg's fashion range - 'Bjorn loves John' underwear - (believe it or not) but it was not long before they were pressed on Federer's future following his shock defeat by Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.

And while neither advocated that the crowds should just be grateful for the memories, they both questioned whether the Swiss master will be capable of matching Pete Sampras's record of seven singles' titles at SW19.

'There's no doubt that Federer is still a great player,' said McEnroe, 'he's still one of the top players and I still think he is capable of winning a major or two.

'I honestly thought he was going to win this tournament. He was playing incredible tennis at the French.

'My concern for him ahead of this was how he was going to deal with the emotional fall-out following what I considered to be the best weekend of his life on clay.
