Country singer Scotty McCreery wins 'American Idol'

American Idol" fans picked their choice for next Nashville superstar: Scotty McCreery was named the show's 10th champ Wednesday. McCreery, 17, beat Lauren Alaina, 16, in the show's all-country, youngest-ever finale.

"Never in my wildest dreams," a stunned McCreery said. He closed the show by singing "I Love You This Big," which will be his first single.

The two singers generated 122.4 million votes, the biggest in "Idol" history.

McCreery's victory continued a recent pattern: He's the fourth male in a row to win the Fox TV contest, with 2007's Jordin Sparks, 17, the last female "Idol."

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, two of the four female winners, have proved the winners with the most successful recording careers.

To end the season, "Idol" rolled out a humongous variety show that enlisted Steven Tyler to sing "Dream On" and Jennifer Lopez to strut while husband Marc Anthony sang. The season finale also featured stars (Beyoncé, Lady Gaga), saluted Broadway's "Spider-Man" (with Bono's help) and brought back "Idol" contestants.
