Ashfaq Parvez Kayani

Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has led the Pakistani military since 2007, when Gen. Pervez Musharraf stepped aside and became a civilian president. General Kayani is regarded as the nation's most powerful official.
In July 2010, in an unusual move, the government announced that the general's term would be extended by three years. The United States backed the decision as it seeks to encourage Pakistan to become a more reliable ally against Taliban and Qaeda militants.
Domestically, General Kayani has increasingly exerted pressure on the civilian government.
The Pakistani military, angered by the inept handling of the devastating floods that struck the country in 2010 and alarmed by a collapse of the economy, began pushing for a shake-up of the elected government, and in the longer term, even the removal of President Asif Ali Zardari and his top lieutenants. In a meeting on September 27, 2010, General Kayani confronted the president and his prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, over incompetence and corruption in the government.
